TPC Racing and Efrin Castro Sweep Gold Cup in IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Weekend at Road Atlanta
BRASELTON, Georgia (September 6, 2020) – TPC Racing driver Efrin Castro scored an impressive weekend sweep of the Gold Cup in IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA and closed to just two points behind in the championship following a dominating event at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.
Castro started the race from the class pole position in the No. 65 TPC Racing/Fine Fare Supermarkets Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and led for the opening 10 minutes before being held up by slower traffic. A pair of slower laps in traffic cost Castro the lead, at least temporarily.
The second-place run was short lived, however, as Castro leapt back into the lead 12 minutes later when championship rival Curt Swearingin, attempting to overtake a Platinum Cup car made contact and came to pit lane. With Castro taking the top spot near the halfway point, he ran to the finish without looking back.
“We were battling all weekend,” Castro said. “He did a pass in front of me and we were going to go at it for the next 30 minutes and an incident happened that took him out, unfortunately. That helped me hit the reset button in my championship chances going to Mid-Ohio, so now our point deficit is not as big. I just want to give thanks to my team because without them it wouldn’t have been possible.”
The win is the third of the season and third of his career for Castro.
Castro was just one part of a successful weekend for TPC Racing. Dan Hardee scored a sixth-place finish in the No. 69 Student Wireless/Apple Rush/Hardee Family Foundation/Palm Beach Cars and Coffee/Michelin Wiper Blades Porsche 911 GT3 Cup in the Platinum Cup Masters. Hardee recovered from an early spin and continued to push forward throughout the 45-minute race.
Tom Kerr‘s second weekend in the IMSA Lamborghini Super Trofeo championship ended one spot shy of his third podium. Kerr drove the No. 74 Lamborghini Sterling/GotVeins.com Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO to fourth on Sunday in the LB Cup class, improving one position from his spot on the grid and his Saturday finish.
“This was another great day for TPC Racing,” TPC Racing Director of Race Operations Harris Levitas said. “Efrin’s win today was huge and a total reset in the points for him. Dan continued to push throughout the race. Tom is continuing to learn the Lamborghini Sterling car and got faster today. I couldn’t be happier with how they drove, and more proud of our crew guys for putting together race-winning cars. We’re looking forward to Mid-Ohio in just a couple of weeks, where we have three Porsche Cup races so it will be an important weekend for all of us.”
TPC Racing returns to action in IMSA competition at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, September 25-27, for a Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama tripleheader. The first race is set for Saturday, Sept. 26 at 9:50 a.m. ET, with Race 2 following later that day at 3:50 p.m. The third race will take place Sunday at 9:20 a.m.
