The key to huge horsepower in high performance cars is air density. A higher air density allows for more fuel to be burned and thus, more power to be produced. In the world of high performance tuning, it is a never ending quest to find new ways of achieving higher air density. With that goal in mind, TPCRacing set out to create the ultimate intercooler design for the Porsche 997/996Turbo. What we came up with were the massive TPCRacing 5" Blitzkrieg Intercoolers.

Designing high quality intercooler upgrades for the 997/996Turbo vehicles is a very difficult process. While the OEM units are very effective on stock/lightly modified cars, high-horsepower vehicles demand far greater CFM of air-flow than the OEM intercoolers or any of the OEM sized aftermarket intercoolers can possibly handle.

 

 

 

TPC Racing take "custom" Intercoolers to the next level

 

In order to produce an effective intercooler upgrade, capable of supporting +700hp, many variables had to be addressed. These variables included, controling pressure drop across the intercooler, controlling intake tempurature change across the intercooler, creating a maximum amount of cooling surface area, and allowing for the most efficient flow of air through both aspects of the intercooler cores. In order to maximize the efficiency of our intercooler design and satisfy our incredibly high standards for performance, we had to custom design our own intercooler cores and end tanks.

 

One of our primary concerns with the design of the TPCRacing Blitzkrieg Intercoolers was controlling pressure drop across the core. With increased cooling comes natural pressure rise, TPCRacing to the rescue, with the 775Blitzkrieg Series Intercoolers. With a whopping 5"(127mm) core, the 775B Intercoolers are a full 57mm larger than the factory 997TT units, allowing them to efficiently flow enough CFM of air for even the highest horsepower applications! However, for even stock or lightly modified cars, the TPCRacing 5" Blitzkrieg Intercoolers will provide a massive improvement in overall performance as well as more consistant performance for periods of extended operation under heavy load.

Months were spent on the development and sizing of the TPC Racing Blitzkrieg Intercooler cores with several different designs being tested before we arrived at our final design.  What has produced is without a doubt, the best 997/996Turbo Intercooler money can buy. Designed as a bar and plate unit, they allow for incredibly efficient airflow through the core as well as amazing heat transfer capabilities over their enormous surface area. 

 

A huge factor in maintaining the efficiency of the Blitzkrieg 5" Intercoolers is their ability to maintain the factory intercooler ducting, with some modification. Don't be fooled by imitators that discard the OE upper intercooler duct to make space for their off-the-shelf intercooler cores. Retaining this ducting is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to generating optimum airflow over the surface of the intercooler. Without the factory ducting feeding the 997Turbo's intercoolers, the airflow will encounter an area of extreme turbulance within the intercooler inlets, and will substantially reduce the intercooler's overall efficiency. By creating a completely custom intercooler core, we were also able to size the units so that they could both maximize surface cooling area, as well as maximizing air flow!
